Hawarden: The Blessing of St Colette
Poor Clare Colettine Community Upper Aston Hall Lane, Hawarden CH5 3EN North Wales Colette died in in 1447. She reformed the Franciscan order in an age of war violence with three Popes (at the same time). She was a saint whom children loved and she is specially remembered as a patron of the unborn, of expectant mothers and of couples who long to conceive a child. Whilst she was still at Besançon, the first monastery of her reform, the father of a dead child brought it to Colette and begged her to restore it to life. She took off her veil, wrapped the baby in it and sent the man back to the Priest who had refused to baptize it... it was restored to life. For centuries in France and Belgium, children and expectant Mother were blessed at the houses of her reform on her feast. The Colettines of Ty Mam Duw revived the custom in the millennium and are keeping their 10th anniversary of this on Saturday 6th February. Over the ten years, hundreds of babies have been conceived and born as a result of this blessing - and our sisters also remember the unborn daily, according to Sr Maria, a member of the community. Apart from the Saturday nearest the saint¹s feastday, people do in fact, come here all round the year. A few days ago a lady of forty who had just conceived for the first time came to ask for prayers and to be blest with the veil. The 'veil' is two threads of Colette's mantle mounted under glass amidst embroidery on a Poor Clare veil like that which the sisters ordinarily wear. Ladies are blest with it placed over the head and gentlemen and children over the shoulders, after the homily at Mass. Believe
BELIEVE 'Go out and tell others about the good news of Jesus Christ!' That was the commission given to the disciples and to all Christians through their Baptism. But that begs the question: How do we go out and tell others? Alternatively: What do we tell others? BELIEVE, a course starting on 8 February and running weekly throughout Lent at St John's Cathedral (Portsmouth), is designed to help Catholics find out more about their faith and develop their confidence in speaking about it to others. BELIEVE is also designed to help those wishing simply to learn more about the Catholic faith.
